Read more to find out what’s involved in an inspection, why it matters, and how it could potentially save you thousands of dollars.

What a Full Electrical Inspection Covers

During an inspection, a qualified electrician in San Jose will assess the visible and hidden aspects of your system. This includes your main service panel, circuit breakers, wiring, outlets, switches, grounding system, and more. Here’s a basic breakdown of what gets evaluated:

  • Electrical Panel: Your breaker box is inspected for proper labeling, safe amperage, signs of overheating, or corrosion.
  • Wiring Conditions: This includes looking for frayed wires, outdated types like aluminum or knob-and-tube, and poor splices or connections.
  • Outlets and Switches: All receptacles are tested for proper grounding and function. Any discoloration or loose-fitting outlets are flagged.
  • GFCI and AFCI Protection: Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas should have GFCI outlets. Modern codes also require AFCI protection in bedrooms and other areas.
  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: These are frequently overlooked but are required in certain locations for safety and compliance.
  • Grounding and Bonding: Your system needs to be properly grounded to safely disperse electrical surges.

A qualified electrical inspector in San Jose will also check for code compliance based on local and national standards. Even if your system works, it may not be up to code, which could impact insurance claims or resale value.

Why Inspections Are Necessary for Older Homes

If your home was built before 1990, chances are high that your electrical system needs attention. Many older homes were built with wiring that can’t handle the load of today’s devices. They weren’t designed for flat screens, central air, gaming consoles, and laptop chargers running 24/7. Outdated panels like Federal Pacific or Zinsco are still out there, even though they’re known fire risks. Aluminum wiring, which was popular in the 60s and 70s, can loosen over time and cause dangerous overheating. Getting an electrical inspection in San Jose is necessary for homes over 30 years old. You might not notice anything wrong because issues usually develop slowly, but a flickering light or warm wall plate can be the start of something serious. An electrician in Sunnyvale, CA can identify potential arcing points or circuits that are running near capacity. In many cases, homeowners don’t need a full rewire, just a few repairs, breaker upgrades, or added circuits.

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding service I recently received from your company. From my initial phone call to the completion of the repair, every aspect of the experience was exemplary. The representative I spoke with was not only incredibly helpful in scheduling an appointment promptly – my kitchen outlet had inexplicably stopped working, causing considerable inconvenience – but also demonstrated a thorough understanding of my situation. Their professionalism and efficiency immediately put me at ease. The electrician who arrived at my home was equally impressive. They  took the time to explain the problem clearly and concisely, patiently answering all my questions despite my limited knowledge of electrical systems. This detailed explanation allowed me to fully understand the necessary repairs and the process involved. Their expertise and calm demeanor were truly reassuring. In short, I was deeply impressed by the overall professionalism, knowledge, and friendliness of every individual I interacted with. The entire experience was seamless and stress-free, a rarity these days. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend your company to anyone requiring electrical services, and I will certainly be using your services again in the future.

I finally made the switch from gas to electric and bought myself a Tesla. The home charger was expensive (I went with level 2) and called Mr Electric to do the install. They were overall great, came the same day to give me an estimate the price seemed reasonable so I went ahead and signed their work order on an iPad the gentleman had. They told me they could start the work the next day, that was unexpected but nice, as I am excited to be able to use my home charger finally. Once they finished the work they provided the permit information and all. I was very pleased and my charger is now in my garage working perfectly. Thank you Galen and Cris for prompt and professional service, that isn’t always the case and it is much appreciated.

My electric garage door stopped working suddenly after using it manually for a couple of weeks I was ready to buy a new one and called this company. They came the next day and were even able to supply the machine, that was a nice surprise. The electrician was friendly and I appreciate them making the whole experience easy. Great job

This company is great, they helped me when no other company I called could. I have been trying to install a few outdoor/indoor sconces on my patio, I called a couple of electricians they said that the way my townhouse was built they could not be installed. I was determined so I called Mr Electric & they came out the next day and explained that it would be a difficult install, but not impossible. In two days they had all three sconces up and running. They weren’t even expensive either, I was very impressed by them. If you have a hard or seemingly impossible job don’t give up like I almost did, give them a call.

How Inspections Can Prevent Fire Hazards

Electrical distribution systems are a leading cause of residential fires. A cracked outlet plate, a loose wire in a ceiling fan, or a breaker that doesn’t trip like it should can become ignition points. During your service, a trained eye looks for the subtle signs of overheating, moisture intrusion, or faulty installation. A charred outlet behind a couch or a melted wire inside a junction box may not be visible to the homeowner, but they stand out to an experienced electrical inspector in San Jose. Thermal imaging, voltage drop testing, and load assessments can also identify trouble spots before they spark. Preventative maintenance might not be flashy, but it’s one of the most effective ways to protect your property and loved ones.

Don’t Skip the Inspection When Preparing Your Home For Sale

Are you selling your house? A clean inspection report can speed up your sale and give buyers confidence. Electrical issues are one of the most common red flags during a home inspection, and they can derail a deal fast. Loose wires in the attic, ungrounded outlets, or a panel that doesn’t meet current code can lead to buyer demands, delays, or withdrawal. Getting a professional inspection before listing your home lets you control the narrative. You’ll know what needs to be fixed, what can be upgraded, and what’s already in good shape. Some sellers use the inspection report as a feature in their listing to show that the home is well-maintained. In competitive markets, taking care of electrical issues up front helps avoid price negotiations later. If you're buying a home, request documentation of a recent inspection. If none exists, hire your own electrician to evaluate the system before closing.
